Bundeskriminalamt (BKA)

Core business and skills

Together with the other police forces of the federation and the federal states and in cooperation with foreign security agencies, the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) makes an active contribution to maintaining internal security in Germany as part of a free and democratic Europe.
To coordinate crime suppression at national and international level, the BKA has been established as the central office for police information and communications as well as for the German CID (Criminal Investigation Division).
By acting as information and communications centre of the German police, the BKA provides support to the police forces of the federation and of the states in connection with the prevention and prosecution of crimes that involve more than one German state, that are of international significance or otherwise of considerable significance.
Within the BKA, the Institute of Law Enforcement Studies and Training (KI) is the leading research and advisory institution for the German police. It provides support to the police forces of the Federation and the German states with regard to crime suppression by offering services in the following areas:
•research on criminology and criminal investigation
•technologies and
•basic and advanced training
The Institute of Law Enforcement Studies and Training builds bridges from research to innovative applications in the field of police work and thus opens up new horizons for fighting crime successfully. Working closely with police officers in the field, its task is to identify weak points throughout the spectrum of police crime-fighting activity, to develop suggestions for improvement and new crime-fighting concepts, and to assist with their implementation. In this way, police authorities are provided with advice and support when new methods for police work are introduced.

Commitment

The Institute of Law Enforcement Studies and Training has a long experience in testing biometric systems for governmental and police uses. The BKA will perform a field test of the system developed in 3D Face within a BKA facility.
